Conservation August 15, 2012 Bali Mynah - The Balinese Phoenix AN ICON OF THE ISLAND’S NATURAL WILDLIFE, THE BALI STARLING IS SO MUCH MORE THAN JUST A PRETTY-LOOKING BIRD.
The Bali starling, or more correctly Bali mynah, Leucopsar Rothschildi, is only found in Bali. An attractive medium-sized bird, it lives mostly in the lowland forests of west Bali and on the island of Nusa Penida. Both the male and female birds look similar with pretty white crests on their heads and distinctive blue skin around their eyes. Sadly it is this attractiveness that nearly wiped them out. Admired by the international bird markets, they were heavily poached and only seven years ago were traded into extreme endangerment.
